ABOUT OUR ONLINE CLASSES
The Academy For The Study Of Religion (ASR) was launched in January 2018.
ASR's aim is:
“to seek to advance the understanding of the links across religion, economy, and society. ASR provides an open platform dedicated to facilitating easy access to education, learning and study of religion, faiths and belief systems that exist throughout the world, and understanding how these systems are interwoven in the fabric of many social norms, values, attitudes, behaviours and habits among various groups.”
OBJECTIVES
- To present the class material from an academic and historical perspective that is articulated with references from credible sources.
- To provide adequate time for group discussion, a question and answer segment and individual evaluation.
- To ensure adherence to the standards established by the Jamaica Tertiary Education Commission (J-TEC) for certification and subsequently for accreditation by the University Council of Jamaica.

COURSE
Introduction to the Study of Religion: A Historical Perspective
Purpose
The main purpose is to present twelve (12) religions recognized by Academia from a historical perspective. Doctrinal and denominational issues will not be addressed, as we aim to present material of a historical and academic nature from clearly identified sources.
Objectives
- To offer participants insights into the function of religion in the lives of individuals and how this function is served through collective adherence to beliefs and tenets
- To examine the factors that give rise to religions
- To discuss the enduring nature of religions
Method
The course will be delivered online for 10 weeks, with each class session lasting two hours. Additionally, webinars that seek to explore the subject matter deeper will be offered every four (4) weekends for two (2) hours.
Registered participants who cannot attend a session, will be able to access the material 24 hours after delivery.

This study invites us to consider our faith in a fresh, new way, informed by common sense, positive tradition and personal experience. It continually asks us to reflect on who or what God is, what is our relationship with this Divine Being, and then invites us to come to our own conclusions of our own self-identity based on our on-going reflection. This course will take us on journey beginning with the oral transmission of fragments, ancient myths and stories that became the nucleus of the Hebrew Scriptures when its codification was first envisaged during the Babylonian exile of the Judean scholars and religious leaders in 6th BCE. This continued until its canon was finalized at some point in 1st CE in response to the emergence of a sect called “The Followers of the Way”. This group morphed into the religion of Christianity. Our main focus will be the impact of historical economic, social, political and technological on the content and orientation of the Christian religion since its birth to the present situation in the 21st century.
